That's a value we are constantly trying to teach our three young kids. And as we near Christmas, this lesson is even more prominent in our minds.
Trips gift-shopping can be quite an adventure in parenting. Many of these moments are more importantly a kid-teaching time about proper money management than a successful shopping experience.
"Can't I just get a toy for me?"
"But you said I have a hundred dollars in my bank account!"
"How come the adults always get to buy something?"
Seems to me that little inner-voice of desire stays with us even as we get older. Hopefully we learn to say no to it more often.
Like many families this holiday, we are striving to keep our gift budget to an appropriate level, and give gifts that won't go to waste.
