Last night, while walking our family dog I was amazed at the big amber moon staring back at me. In times past, the glorious autumn moons were said to help farmers working late to bring in their crops. They could continue being productive by moonlight even after the sun had set. Hence the name "Harvest Moon". It really is a unique sight.
What makes the harvest moon so special is the path it follows. The moon always travels close to the line the sun takes in the sky, but early this month this path is at a particularly shallow angle to the horizon. The result is that the moon never gets too far above the horizon all night long for a number of nights in a row - a neat optical illusion of a larger moon. On a clear autumn night it's breathtaking.
We hope this fall moon finds you feeling productive in your "harvest". Do take time to enjoy the sights!
